The Best Quotes Of Martin Luther King Jr.

Most people can name at least one Martin Luther King Jr. quote. However, a lot of the man’s best quotes do not get the kind of recognition that they deserve. Read on to learn more about his most important speeches and statements.

Letter from Birmingham Jail

After Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested for protesting in 1963, he spent time in a jail in Birmingham, Alabama. While he was there, he published an open letter that advocated for civil disobedience.

Today, the letter is considered to be one of Martin Luther King Jr’s most important works. The letter contains many of his most famous quotes, including “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” and King’s criticisms of the white moderates that failed to support his cause. The letter also contains praise for the nonviolent protestors that were fighting for civil rights in Birmingham despite the risk of imprisonment.

The “I Have A Dream Speech”

Martin Luther King Jr. gave a number of memorable speeches over the course of his life, but none are as memorable as the speech he delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963. The speech was delivered 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed millions of slaves. In his speech, King claimed that “the Negro still is not free.”

The best-known portion of the speech is the title; it’s rare to encounter a person in the United States that is unfamiliar with the “I have a dream” refrain. Today, this is considered to be one of the greatest speeches of all time.

The Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech

In 1964, King became the youngest man ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He was only 35 when the award was bestowed upon him. King chose to donate the entirety of his prize to the Civil Rights movement.

During the speech, King acknowledged that the Civil Rights movement had still not attained the peace that they were fighting for. He described the movement as “beleaguered.” He also talked about the importance of avoiding violence and oppression when trying to fight against violence and oppression.

Although Martin Luther King Jr.’s life was tragically cut short, his words had an incredible impact on the world today. His influence can still be felt in cities all across the United States, from Philadelphia, to Houston, to Oakland.  Because of the speeches King made, many people were able to gain rights they did not have previously. When you look at his best quotes, you can see why he was such an important figure in the Civil Rights movement.

A Summary Of The Flint Water Crisis

The Flint water crisis is one of the most famous cases of environmental contamination issues in recent American history. Now understood to be a human rights issue in the United States, the water crisis in Flint illuminates the trouble that comes with poor regulation of public resources.
How Did The Crisis Begin?
In April 2014, the city of Flint, Michigan, changed its drinking water source from water sourced from Lake Huron and Detroit River to the Flint River to reduce costs by way of delivery through a new pipeline between Flint and the river. The major issues behind this change were not the source of the water itself, but the treatment of the drinking water once the switch took place. The water sourced from Lake Huron and the Detroit River was treated by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. The water sourced from the Flint River was improperly processed by the city of Flint and caused major corrosion issues across the water lines of the city, leading lead to slowly permeate the potable water and eventually create neurotoxicity and other systemic issues among residents using the city water. In August and September, mere months after the switch was initiated, the residents were given advisories to boil their water prior to using it for consumption or bathing. It was a sign of things to come.
In January 2015, the city officials of Flint refused to reconnect the water supply back to the Lake Huron and Detroit River sources, again citing costs as an obstacle. The following month, a Flint citizen’s water was tested by Environmental Protection Agency manager Miquel Del Toral and came up positive for lead particulates at seven times the legal allowed limit by the EPA. The following months brought chaos, and with it, stories of children suffering brain damage due to their susceptibility to lead in the drinking water, an official city mandate for citizens to discontinue use of all of the city’s water, and an issued state of emergency.
What Happened After 2015?
In 2016, four city officials were charged with criminal wrongdoing after a long, drawn out battle to have the federal government hear the plight of Flint’s citizens. In 2017, the city has finally been cleared to have over 18,000 water lines in Flint examined and replaced by the federal government. The water subsidies that have kept the city running on bottled water and managing bills for unusable public water have been eliminated, much to the mayor’s opposition. The water levels have been determined to be below EPA standards for the first time in three years by the Michigan Department of Environment Quality in early 2017, though Flint citizens and many officials still maintain that the water continues to be an issue in day to day life. The fight between the citizens, city, and federal government will continue to unfurl as health defects continue to show up after years of lead exposure, and as the battle for public resources continues.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Increases The Number Of Americans With Health Insurance

Most Americans have heard of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. The official name of this legislation is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. First passed in 2010, the ACA provides healthcare coverage for millions of Americans. Under the legislation, doctors and hospitals were required to adopt strategies to deliver improved health outcomes and lower costs.

The primary goals of the ACA were to reduce the costs of health care and expand health insurance coverage. The legislation also expanded the Medicaid program to provide coverage for all adults who’s income is below 138% of the federal poverty level.

Since the implementation of the ACA, the number of individuals in the American cities, such as Austin, without adequate health care coverage has dropped significantly. The Congressional Budget Office noted during their evaluation of the legislation that the ACA would decrease the budget deficit. The CBO also noted that repealing the ACA would result in increasing the budget deficit.

The ACA delivers several protections for all Americans. First, the law requires that insurance companies cover anyone with a pre-existing condition. This includes pregnancy. The Act prevents insurance companies from charging more for this coverage.

Everyone receives free preventative care and young adults can stay on their parents’ health care insurance plan until age 26. The legislation also ends yearly dollar limits and lifetime caps on the amount of coverage provided for essential health benefits.

The ACA also holds insurance companies liable for any insurance rate increases and provides tools to help individuals understand their coverage. It is also illegal for an insurance company to cancel health care coverage if an insured person becomes ill.

The insured can choose their doctor and are often able to keep their own doctor even if they change coverage. It also protects employees from retaliation if they file a claim for healthcare reimbursement.

The ACA was the most sweeping reform of the healthcare and insurance industries since Medicaid and Medicare in 1965. Most of the cost savings occurred in Medicare, while the largest gains in healthcare coverage occurred as Medicaid expanded. There are regulations that impact employers and some that affect how health care is delivered.

To help certain low-income individuals receive health care insurance, the federal government provides subsidies to help with the cost of health insurance under the ACA. Additionally, certain small businesses are also eligible to receive government assistance to pay for health insurance for their employees. This assistance is in the form of refundable tax credits.

The FAFSA – The Best Way For A Student To Get Financial Aid

If your child is preparing to attend college, they should fill out the FAFSA. Formerly known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, this is a form that must be prepared every year in order for your child to receive federal aid. Both undergraduate and graduate students must complete the form so the federal government can determine their eligibility for student aid. All colleges use the FAFSA and every college your child is considering should be included on the application form so the college has the necessary information they need to process your student’s application.

Even if you or your child doesn’t believe they are eligible for financial aid, they should still complete the FAFSA. Everything can be done online and the application is pretty user-friendly to complete.

Before the FAFSA can be processed, either you or your child must complete last year’s federal tax return and input the information on the form. There is a link directly to the IRS if you don’t want to take the time to manually input the information.

The type of financial aid offered will depend on either your or your child’s income. If you claim your child on your federal tax returns, your child will not be able to use their income. This can impact the amount of aid offered to your child.

The results of the FAFSA review also determines if your child is eligible for low-cost student loans or other types of financial aid such as the Pell grant.

The FAFSA asks for both student and parent information as long as the student is unmarried and under age 24. The information required includes assets, income, and demographic information. The information must be accurate and up to date when the FAFSA is filed. Each school year, the FAFSA is updated which is why a new version must be completed every year.

Once the FAFSA is completed and successfully submitted, it is reviewed and the Expected Family Contribution is calculated. This is the amount that a family is expected to contribute to a student’s costs for college. This number is independent of a specific college and is used by all colleges.

The colleges use the FAFSA to both determine the amount of aid a student may receive and to calculate if a student can receive any of the college’s own funds. A student will receive their score anywhere from one to three weeks after submitting the FAFSA.

Who Are Famous Immigration Rights Activists?

The immigration rights that people have the United States were not always this well constructed. They have been designed, and fought for over the last several decades. As with any movement, there are always going to be key players which can make things happen. There will always be leaders that people will follow, especially when it is dealing with something as important as the immigration rights of human beings. There have been several activists that have played key roles in the ability of people from outside of the United States to get in. Although there are hard fighting immigration lawyers working to score key victories in cases that make immigration into the US possible for people in many different countries, changes do need to happen to make things better and these changes are happening right now.

Who Are Some Of The Key Players?

One of the most well-known civil rights pioneers was a man by the name of Cesar Estrada Chavez. He was born back in the 1920s, and died in 1993. He was an American labor leader that primarily fought for the rights of Mexican workers that were in the United States. However, he did play a large role in immigration for Mexicans coming into the US, fighting the restrictive immigration laws of the UFW. He was a key player in the 1986 federal immigration act which gave amnesty provisions. Other immigration leaders include Gloria Anzaldua, an author that was heavily focused on fighting segregation and problems with immigration. Jose Antonio Vargas is an activist and journalist who is heavily focused on reforming the immigration system. His role is very important today with so much focus on undocumented immigrants in the United States. He is hoping to pass a Senate bill that can help not only undocumented immigrants in the United States, but help those that want to come in do so without prejudice. Business owner and founder of AOL, Steve Case, is a very prominent advocate for immigration reform. He is looking at expanding visas for people that want to get an education in science, technology, math and engineering.

How Will They Be Able To Help

For those that have already passed on, the work they have done has laid a foundation for immigrants that want to come into the US from all over the world. Those that are currently trying to change immigration laws, or modify them, are doing their part, even in the United States Senate. Hopefully these changes will continue, allowing people to become citizens of the US using a much better system for vetting people that truly want to come to the United States to improve their lives.

What You Need To Know About The Black Panthers

The Black Panthers were a popular militant black activist group that was founded in the 1960’s by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The Black Panther Party got its start in Oakland, California. They stood up for civil rights, but instead of only advocating peaceful protest, they also indulged in violence when necessary and had frequent skirmishes with the police.

The Black Panthers believed in defending the black community and they were leaders in community based programs to feed the children and help the poor. One of the things they believed in was revolutionary socialism. The Panthers made history by being the first political organization to fight for black freedom in a militant way. They were fighting for freedom and equality and they wanted both color and gender equality.

The Black Panthers were influenced by Malcolm X and they built the theory of their party around his ideas. They wanted to foster self-respect in black people and were willing to fight for it. They were influential in setting up a wide number of social programs for people in the black community including education and medical programs. They brought about positive social change, but were deemed extremely dangerous by the United States government which sought to discredit them.

The Panthers were labeled as dangerous and threatening, and the government tried to infiltrate the group and raid it to remove the key players. Their vision of unity was just too scary for the mainstream. They embraced Marxist theories and wanted to be at the front of the revolution and they really were. They marched and took on the establishment with protests that often turned violent. A police officer was killed in a protest, yet they continued to form alliances with many of the progressive political parties of the time.

The Black Panthers were raised to celebrity status and many white people wanted to join them which caused a lot of arguing withing the group as some people felt that allowing whites in was against the black liberation movement. The Black Panthers influence can still be felt today in disadvantaged communities. Communities still offer free breakfast programs for school children. At the height of the black liberation movement, the Black Panthers were feeding breakfast to over 10,000 kids a day. They did lots of good in the community and organized free medical centers and even hosted blood drives.

Who Was Malcolm X? Here’s Your Ultimate Guide

If you’re interested in learning more about Malcolm X and why he is such a culturally significant figure, then you’ve come to the right place. In this guide, we’re going to delve into the history of Malcolm X as well as learn more about his “legacy” so let’s get straight to it.

First of all, Malcolm X was a famous African-American who rose to significance due to his notorious human rights activism in the 1960s.

Although some people still believe he as born in Oakland or even Orange County, he was actually born in Omaha, Nebraska.

As a young man, he grew up as an orphan due to the early death of his father and the institutionalization of his mother, which led him to be raised in a number of different foster homes.

In his early twenties, he was arrested for the crimes of breaking and entering, and during his incarceration, he joined the Nation of Islam. Upon his release from prison, he quickly rose to prominence within the organization and became the public face of the movement, for all intents and purposes.

This controversial movement promoted what is now often regarded as black supremacy, and it also campaigned for segregation, rather than joining with the growing civil rights movement which had a strong focus on integration.

However, by the mid-1960s, Malcolm X grew apart from the Nation of Islam ideology and even expressed regret on several occasions. Instead, he became a Sunni Muslim, and largely disavowed his previous association with the organizations of his past.

After his reformation in this manner, he campaigned for black self-determination and also became a significant figure in the growing Pan-Africanism movement that was growing rapidly during the 1960s.

The life story of Malcolm X ends with his assassination in 1965 when he was aged 39. The culprits behind the murder were people who were associated with the Nation of Islam, the same group he was connected with in his younger years.

Since his death, Malcolm X has remained a key cultural figure, although this is certainly not without controversy. While his early beliefs are still steeped in controversy, he is widely celebrated for his reformation and eagerness to work with the leaders of the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

These days, he is largely credited for his inspiration for black Americans and raising their sense of self-esteem, as well as greatly encouraging them to connect with their African roots while campaigning for equal rights within their American societies.

The Impact Of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964

The landmark piece of legislation in the fight for civil rights was the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Enacted in 1964, this act outlawed discrimination based on color, race, or national origin. It prohibited racial segregation in public schools, protected voter’s registration rights and prohibited separation based on discrimination in all public places.
When the Act was first passed, the government did not provide very strong enforcement authority. This was supplemented and strengthened over the next several years. Congress used its authority under various parts of the Constitution as the foundation for the legislation.

These authorities were principally its duty under the Fourteenth Amendment to protect all citizens equally under the laws, its power under Article One to regulate interstate commerce and the duty under the Fifteenth Amendment to protect voting rights. The Act was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson in July of 1964.

The Civil Rights Act was the result of many years of activist lobbying for comprehensive protection of civil rights. The legislation was first sent to Congress in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, but as a result of stalling tactics by certain Southern segregationist, Senators was delayed in the Judiciary Committee. Following the assassination of President Kennedy, President Johnson made it his priority to get this legislation passed.

The legislation included provisions that barred segregation and discrimination in public facilities, education, housing, and jobs. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was also created by the legislation. This commission’s goal was to ensure fair hiring practices. It also established the Comunity Relations Service, a federal organization focused on helping local communities as they dealt with civil rights issues. The U.S. Office of Education was also authorized to provide financial aid to communities as they moved to desegregate public schools.

There was significant resistance to the implementation of the Act. There were strong emotions on both sides and George Wallace, the Governor of Alabama ran for President of the United States on an anti-integration campaign and actually did well in the presidential primaries of 1964 in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Maryland.

Initially, there was some confusion as to whether or not the legislation applied to the private sector. In the beginning, some public venues tried to turn into private clubs instead of being forced to integrate. Eventually, the Supreme Court declared these types of actions a violation of the law. This determination upheld the constitutionality of the Civil Rights Act and its equal access provisions.

Famous Black Women Activists You Should Know About

The civil rights movement is active in the United States and there are many women who are active in the movement. There are plenty of good people working hard to better the lives of black people and help them achieve economic independence and equality.

Though slavery has been over for more than 100 years, many blacks are still feeling the effects of slavery all these years later. Racism is alive and well, and even on the rise, and blacks have been kept down in many ways. They have been profiled by the police and denied opportunities right and left. Activists are busy trying to right the wrongs in society and many have lost their lives in the process.

Women have been active in the movement since the beginning. Angela Davis was heavily involved with the Black Panthers and is now a professor. Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus. Modern activists like Kamala Harris are working within the political system to try to change things.

The modern civil rights movement is working to end segregation in the south and is pushing for a more equal public school system. The movement is trying to end violence in the community and make sure that children and adults have enough food and medical care. Poverty is a huge problem in many black communities and activists are trying to level the economic playing field through many types of programs.

The school system is a big mess as well, with poor students going to schools that do not have enough funding. Poor black kids are just not getting the education they need to keep up with the job market. Modern activists are starting programs that are helping to teach kids what they are going to need to know to go to college and get a job.

Black males have a higher incarceration rate than any other race. Civil rights activists are working to help release prisoners who have been wrongly convicted and help rehabilitate them when they get out so they can get jobs and not have to resort to crime.

The black community has many problems to overcome, but it is getting help from the male and female activists who want to help change things for the better. Civil rights are more important now than ever, especially in today’s hate-filled political climate.

Who Are The Biggest Celebrity Activists?

Hollywood is well known for producing a substantial number of people that can become active this for many different causes, including Peter Deluca. These people believe in something, and wish to contribute, and they can do a lot because they have the money to do so. It is this ability to contribute that is why so many actors and actresses nationwide become not only activists, but become well-known as an activist in the process. Since their names and pictures are already well known to the public, it’s easy to identify them once you have heard their name in connection with an activism group.

George Clooney

He is a celebrity activist that really started from humble beginnings, at least in regard to the roles that he had early on. It was not until his later years that he began to make his way in Hollywood, and became one of Hollywood’s most visible and wealthy stars. Many people have compared him to Cary Grant, but it is his celebrity activism that has helped identify him in the public even more. He has been outspoken about violence in Darfur, organized a telethon to help raise money for the people that suffered in the Haitian earthquake, and is very focused on helping people in Africa.

Angelina Jolie

Although most people know the actress for the many roles that she has had over the last few decades, she is also known as a celebrity activist. She typically plays iconic heroes in the movies that she does, and this is also true of her in real life. She has been a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, going back to 2001. She was able to use her celebrity status to motivate people to contribute to certain causes including helping people in Sierra Leone, Thailand, and Cambodia.

One of the main reasons that celebrities can become so prominent in activism is that they have connections to people with money. They will probably have friends that are worth millions of dollars, and their friends will also have millions, and this can lead to substantial contributions. However, at the very least they are able to use their name on advertisements and websites to get people to donate money. It is their notoriety in the movie industry, as well as their popularity with fans around the world, that helps them become very successful activists that can help people worldwide.
